Waveguide Flange Shim

Waveguide flange shims are precision components used to ensure proper alignment and sealing between waveguide sections in microwave systems. These thin metal spacers adjust the mating surfaces for optimal connection, enhancing system performance by preventing air gaps and ensuring efficient signal transmission across various applications.

Precision aluminum and copper spacers for controlled waveguide flange spacing, alignment and interface adjustment across 0.32–112 GHz. Published configurations cover 1–50 mm thicknesses with model-dependent cover, grooved and other flange interfaces. Custom thickness, material, finish and sealing requirements can be reviewed against the mating-flange drawing.

Published Product Scope

A configurable interface component for standard rectangular waveguide systems

A waveguide flange shim is installed between compatible mating interfaces when a defined mechanical spacing or flange adjustment is required. The selected part must match the waveguide aperture, flange family, bolt or alignment arrangement, material and finished thickness specified by the assembly drawing.

Define the sealing function separately

A shim can support the required spacing and mating geometry, but the shim alone does not establish a pressure rating, moisture seal or RF seal. A sealed assembly requires a compatible flange pair, the specified gasket or O-ring, controlled compression and an agreed leakage or pressure acceptance method.

Mechanical spacing Specify the finished shim thickness and any dimensional tolerance controlled by the assembly drawing.

Pressure-only sealing Select a compatible non-conductive gasket or O-ring when the approved design requires pressure sealing only.

Pressure and RF sealing A conductive gasket may be required where the joint must provide both environmental sealing and electrical continuity.

Selection Workflow

Confirm the complete interface—not only the WR size

The WR designation identifies the nominal waveguide size, but it does not fully define the flange face, groove, hole pattern, alignment arrangement or required sealing system.

Operating band

Provide the complete minimum-to-maximum operating frequency, not only the center frequency.

Waveguide size

Confirm the applicable WR and IEC/R designation shown in the project documentation.

Flange designation

State the complete cover, grooved, choke, CPR, PBR, UBR, UDR, UG or project-specific code.

Thickness and material

Define finished thickness, tolerance and the required aluminum or copper configuration.

Drawing and acceptance

Approve the mating-interface drawing and agree any dimensional, RF, pressure or documentation requirements.

Interface Compatibility

Cover, grooved and choke interfaces require different mating details

Dolph publishes IEC and EIA flange designation references across the standard rectangular waveguide range. Use the exact flange code and mating drawing when selecting a shim; similarly named flanges are not automatically interchangeable.

Review EIA and IEC flange references

Cover / flat interface

Confirm the aperture, outer dimensions, hole pattern, alignment features and the compatible mating face.

Grooved interface

Confirm groove dimensions and the specified gasket or O-ring. A groove alone does not define pressure capability.

Choke or special interface

Use the controlled interface drawing to verify choke geometry, orientation and the approved mating configuration.

Dolph Microwave states that it was founded in 2001 and manufactures microwave components and antenna feed systems. Published manufacturing capabilities include CNC machining, turning, waveguide forming and bending, soldering and brazing of copper, copper alloys and aluminum, plating, passivation and assembly.

Mechanical processing CNC milling and turning, waveguide forming and bending, abrasive machining and diamond grinding are listed by the company.
Joining and finishing Published capabilities include soldering and brazing, electrolytic and electroless plating, anodising and passivation.
Measurement capabilities The support page lists RF vector and scalar systems up to 100 GHz, waveguide calibration, EMI/EMS and environmental testing capabilities.
Quality management scope The published ISO 9001:2015 certificate identifies waveguide component design, manufacture and sale within its certified scope.

For models operating above 100 GHz, confirm the applicable measurement method, test range and deliverable documentation before ordering. The validity date printed on the currently published ISO certificate is August 7, 2026; verify the current certificate status when certification evidence is required.

Published surface treatment

The product note states that Dolph-MW models include Surtec/corrosion-protection treatment and flat-black paint. Flanges are described as unplated, polished and Surtec-treated.

Alternative finishes

Other finishes and paint colors are stated as available on request. Define the required finish in the RFQ rather than assuming the catalog finish will apply to a custom build.

Drawing-controlled supply

For replacement, integration or non-standard applications, use the approved drawing to control thickness, aperture, holes, groove geometry, material, finish and inspection requirements.
